Former President Mohamed Nasheed on Friday underscored the importance of preserving Vilimale’s natural features, urging that the island remain a sanctuary protected from becoming a "concrete jungle."

In a post on social media, Nasheed stressed that Vilimale’s lush greenery and distinctive environmental character must be preserved. He also argued that high-rise developments and large-scale urban construction would be better suited to areas such as Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi.

His remarks come as the Thilamale’ Bridge project, which will connect Malé, Vilimale’, and Thilafushi, nears completion, with 75 percent of the overall project already finished. Earlier this year, Project Manager S.M. Viswamurthy estimated that the bridge sections linking Malé and Vilimale’ would be completed by the end of October.

Despite the progress of the project, residents of Vilimale’ have continued to express concerns that the bridge could erode the island’s characteristic tranquility. Reflecting these concerns, a petition was submitted to the Parliament in February, urging lawmakers to take proactive measures to safeguard the island’s peaceful environment.

Known for its densely grown trees and tranquil atmosphere, Vilimale’ remains a popular retreat for residents of the Greater Malé area. The island’s restrictions on motor vehicles also help maintain a safe, pedestrian-friendly environment, particularly for children.
