Minister of Home Affairs Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has said that the government has been successful in implementing the law, to a degree that no other government has been able to accomplish in the history of the country
Speaking at a press conference held in the government office complex Velaanaage to share information with the public regarding the progresses made and the initiatives undertaken by the Home Ministry and its departments, Dr. Jameel said that a number of crimes have increased in the current environment but said that they have accomplished considerable achievements towards establishing a safer society.
“Even though a number of crimes have increased in the environment we are experiencing in Maldives today, great accomplishments have been achieved in establishing peace in the country, and towards providing a safer environment for the people. As a part of this success, in order to implement law in the Maldives, we have now provided the services of the police to a wider area, such that it has never been provided before. Even now we are continuing to widen the service to even more places,” said Jameel.
He said that new police stations will be established in various areas across the country this year.
Jameel pointed out that Home Ministry has been able to produce results despite great obstacles and noted that the serious crime rate in the country has decreased significantly during the recent past. He said that a number of programs have been initiated to establish a peaceful environment in the Maldives.
Home Minister said that in addition to the work that is being done through the existing legislature, long term efforts are also being made focused for the future generations.
“The work that is currently being carried out include, in addition to the work that is being carried out through existing legislature, long term efforts, first of its kind, aimed at the generations of the future,” Jameel said.
He continued to say that he believes that results can be achieved under the civil education campaign, which includes initiatives taken up jointly by the police and that Juvenile Justice Unit, which aims to reduce the crime rate and ensure that the Maldivian people respect the law and that produce a population that refrains from criminal activity.
