Parliament committee decides to appoint member to CSC to replace Fahmy

Parliament Committee on Independent Institutions has decided to appoint another member as a replacement for Civil Service Commission member Mohamed Fahumy Hassan.

A parliament committee meeting was held regarding the Supreme Court ruling that declared the Parliament decision to remove Fahmy from office was invalid. The motion presented to the committee to appoint a replacement for Fahmy was passed by the majority vote of 5 out of 6 MPs in who took part in the vote. The 5 MPs who voted belong to Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). Vilufushi MP Riyaz Rasheed withheld his vote.

The motion was presented to the parliamentary committee by MDP Parliamentary group member and Dhidhoo MP Ahmed Sameer. The motion was supported by MDP Parliamentary group member Maafannu-south MP Imthiyaz Fahmy.

The motion was presented and voted amongst various conflicts and disagreements as Vilufushi MP Riyaz Rasheed and Kudahuvadhoo MP Ahmed Amir attempted to disrupt and halt the committee on various occasions. MP Amir does not sit on the committee.

The committee was chaired by the Kulhudhuffushi-south MP Mohamed Nasheed.

MP Mohamed Nasheed said that the purpose the committee meeting, which was held regarding the Supreme Court ruling, was not to challenge the Supreme Court but said that the it was convened held due to a notice that they received requesting to hold a meeting.
