Ukraine and Russia have exchanged fresh attacks, with Russian strikes killing at least eight people in Kiev and a power outage affecting the city of Sevastopol in Russian-annexed Crimea, as fighting continued over the eastern town of Kostyantynivka.
More than 10 explosions were heard in Kiev early on Monday during a ballistic missile alert, according to AFP.
"The enemy is striking with ballistic missiles," Serhiy Popko, head of Kiev’s military administration, wrote on Telegram, while Mayor Vitali Klitschko said air defence systems were operating.
Klitschko later said that the city is under massive attack and one residential building was badly damaged in the attack, and warned that residents could be trapped beneath the rubble.
Energy network targeted
Meanwhile, the city of Sevastopol was left without electricity after what local authorities described as a Ukrainian attack on energy infrastructure.
"Following an enemy attack on energy infrastructure near Sevastopol, our city was temporarily left without electricity," Governor Mikhail Razvozhayev wrote on Telegram.
The latest exchange came as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said fighting continued for the strategically important eastern town of Kostyantynivka despite Russian claims that it had captured the settlement.
Moscow announced earlier this week that it had seized the town, a key gateway to larger cities in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, but Kiev rejected the claim, saying Ukrainian forces continued defending it.
Zelenskyy also warned that Russia was preparing a new large-scale attack ahead of this week’s NATO summit in Türkiye, where he is expected to hold talks with US President Donald Trump.
"Intelligence once again has information the Russians are preparing a new massive strike," he said.
At least four people were killed in Russian drone and missile strikes across Ukraine on Sunday.
Russia-Ukraine war, Europe’s largest conflict since World War II, has continued for nearly four-and-a-half years.
