Vessels entering SAMPA given extended window to comply with mandatory propeller‑guard rule

Vessels entering the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA) have been given an additional window to install propeller guards, with the requirement now enforceable until 30 June.

The government announced in February 2025 that propeller guards would be made compulsory for all vessels entering SAMPA under the area’s official management plan.

In a press release, the Environmental Regulation Authority (ERA) said vessels operating in SAMPA must have propeller guards installed before 30 June, noting that only applications submitted after installing the guard will be eligible for entry.

However, vessels already registered before 30 June, and those that submit registration applications before that date, will be granted an extension to complete installation.

ERA said it will continue taking action against illegal operators in the area, stating that the propeller‑guard requirement is part of broader efforts to strengthen safety and environmental protection within SAMPA.
