The Criminal Court has extended the remand of two young men accused of helping a suspect flee police custody.
The two Maldivian men, aged 22 and 25, were arrested under a court warrant on June 13. They were both initially remanded in police custody for 10 days.
The Criminal Court extended their remand by 15 days on Wednesday.
Court documents show that the duo is accused of helping a suspect arrested in a case being investigated by the police’s Family and Gender Affairs Department to flee police custody.
Although both suspects asked for leniency in their detention, the court decided that there was sufficient evidence to warrant the suspicion against them, after the police submitted witness statements, incident report, and CCTV footage to court.
The court documents show the younger of the two has a record for prior arrests and detentions.
