Zakat House spending rises to MVR 3.8m in April, driven by medical assistance

The Maldives Zakat House spent MVR 3.8 million from the Zakat Al‑Mal Fund in April 2026, with the largest share directed toward medical assistance for the poor and needy, according to statistics released on Thursday.

The agency reported that Zakat Al‑Mal disbursement in April 2025 stood at MVR 2.8 million. This increased to MVR 3.8 million in April 2026, a year‑on‑year rise of 34.8 percent.

According to the figures, disbursements were made across three main categories: Fi Sabilillah, Poor & Needy, and Aamil (administrative costs).

The highest expenditure was recorded under the Fi Sabilillah category, which totaled MVR 2.17 million.

The Poor & Needy category accounted for MVR 1.44 million, while MVR 195,003.79 was spent under the Aamil category.

Under Fi Sabilillah, funds were disbursed for three key areas:

  • Completion of higher education: MVR 290,274.76

  • Quran memorisation and spreading Quranic knowledge: MVR 1,093,749.47

  • Construction of Quran centres in the atolls: MVR 782,992.50

The Zakat Fund’s largest single expenditure last month was on medical assistance for the poor and needy, amounting to MVR 1.26 million.

An additional MVR 182,731 was spent on essential basic‑needs assistance.

Administrative expenditure, which includes staff salaries and operational costs, fell sharply compared to the same period last year.

Aamil disbursement dropped from MVR 483,077.82 in April 2025 to MVR 195,003.79 in April 2026, a reduction of nearly 60 percent.
