Parliament’s General Purpose Committee on Wednesday decided to allocate 50 minutes for debate on the no‑confidence motion against Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim, and 10 minutes for Nazim to respond.
The motion was submitted by PNC MP Abdul Sattar Mohamed and seconded by Dhuvaafaru MP Mohamed Ali.
Abdul Sattar proposed that members be given 50 minutes to debate, with Nazim receiving 10 minutes before the debate begins, and three minutes for each member to speak. The total time allocated for the matter is one hour.
The General Purpose Committee passed the proposal with the support of five members. One member abstained, while seven members attended Wednesday’s sitting.
The impeachment session is expected to take place on Thursday.
The PNC parliamentary group decided earlier on Wednesday to remove Nazim from the post of Deputy Speaker. The reason for the sudden loss of confidence has not been officially disclosed.
A senior PNC figure previously told Sun that Nazim had been asked to resign but refused, prompting the move to impeach him.
The resolution, signed by 73 MPs, accuses Nazim of abusing his position to create discord and disrupt the interests of Parliament. However, it does not specify the actions that led to the allegations.
It further states that Nazim has obstructed the duties of MPs.
“The Deputy Speaker of Parliament has been absolved of his responsibility for abusing his influence, creating sedition, and repeatedly acting in a biased manner that distracts from the interests of Parliament,” the resolution reads.
