Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim, on Tuesday, revealed that efforts are underway to install several radar systems across the Maldives with the assistance of the Italian government.
Speaking at a press conference held at the President's Office, Minister Thoriq detailed that the project involves the installation of four specialized radars. He emphasized that the integration of these four new units with the existing radar in Malé and the upcoming Doppler radar in Addu City will enable comprehensive, nationwide weather monitoring.
Under this initiative, the four radar systems are scheduled to be installed in the following locations:
The Minister confirmed that funding for these units has been secured and the project has officially been opened for bidding. He expressed confidence that the contract for installation will be awarded shortly, allowing physical works to commence without further delay.
In addition to these systems, Minister Thoriq noted that the tender process for the large-scale Doppler weather radar to be stationed in Addu Gan is also progressing, with the necessary finances already in place.
The Minister stated that the primary objectives of this initiative are to establish a comprehensive radar network, enhance human resource development, and advance scientific research in the field.
Additionally, the project aims to strengthen the dissemination of climate change data and early warning systems for various disasters. It also focuses on improving weather monitoring, forecasting, and modeling capabilities, alongside enhancing impact-based forecasting. Furthermore, the initiative seeks to bolster the systems used to provide timely information on weather-related risks and early warnings to the general public.
The weather radar located at Velana International Airport (VIA) resumed operations in September 2024 following extensive repairs.
According to the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office), this radar utilizes cutting-edge technology similar to that used in developed nations. It enables real-time monitoring of weather patterns within a 250-kilometer radius of Hulhulé.
