The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has extended the deadline for applications for 100 housing units built in B. Thulhaadhoo and Th. Vilufushi.
In an announcement on Saturday, the ministry said the new deadline for submitting applications is 23:59 pm on Thursday. Applications must be submitted through the Hiyaavehi Portal. The previous deadline was Saturday.
Eligibility criteria for the Thulhaadhoo units include residents of the island as well as those who have migrated there and lived on the island continuously for at least 10 years.
However, the opposition MDP has raised concerns over the reopening of the application process. The party alleges that the previous government’s permanent list was cancelled and the forms reopened to influence the upcoming council elections.
The MDP also said the council’s exclusion from the process goes against the Constitution and the spirit of the Decentralization Act.
Last September, Thulhaadhoo residents protested outside the council office over delays in allocating the housing units. Following the protests, the council released a permanent list of point recipients. The current government has since cancelled that list and reopened applications under a new regulation.
