PPM was formed as result of their rejection of DRP leadership: Thasmeen

Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) has said that the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) was formed as result of their rejection of the DRP leadership and thus, DRP will not join with PPM in a coalition.

DRP Leader and Kendhoo MP Ahmed Thasmeen Ali said today that DRP has decided to field a candidate for the presidential elections and that whatever coalitions they form will be subjected to that decision.

“PPM was established as result of their rejection of the DRP leadership. So we will never form a coalition with that party,” Thasmeen said.

Thasmeen said that his party will never support a hereditary form of governance.

“Hereditary rule, we cannot support that. So we cannot form a coalition with PPM,” said Thasmeen.

When he was asked if DRP is willing to form a coalition with other parties, he said that he might form a coalition if it comes to that, but stressed that the party has decided to field its presidential candidate and that whatever decision they make will be made within those boundaries.

Thasmeen has previously said that DRP will not form a coalition with Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) as long as former President Nasheed competes as their presidential candidate.

The party continues to encourage other parties to form coalitions with PPM, but has not yet joined in coalition with any other party.
