Bangladeshi workers injured in Dhigurah blaze remain in intensive care

Fire at an expatriate accommodation block in ADh. Dhigurah that resulted in the deaths of five people on March 13, 2026.

Two Bangladeshi workers remain in intensive care at the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), a week after a deadly fire broke out at their accommodation block in ADh. Dhigurah, killing their colleagues.

The devastating fire, reported to authorities at 01:57 am March 13, resulted in the death of five Bangladeshi workers, and seriously injured two others.

The two workers who survived the fire with serious burns were transferred to IGMH in Male’, where they are being treated on ventilators.

A spokesperson from IGMH told Sun on Sunday that their condition remains serious, and they remain on life support.

The fire at the accommodation block resulted from a gas leak in the kitchen. The people inside were rescued by the police and civilians by breaking in through the wall in the back of the building.

The bodies of at least two of the five victims of the fire were flown back to Bangladesh last week.

In a letter of condolence to Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, President Dr. Mohamed provided assurance he has instructed relevant authorities to “closely investigate the matter and take every necessary step to prevent an incident of this scale from occurring again.”

The deadly fire is under investigation by a special investigative team from the Major Crime Investigations Department of the police.

Meanwhile, the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) is also conducting an inquiry to determine whether systemic lapses in safety or human rights violations played a role in the tragedy.
