As part of the redevelopment of Boduthakurufaanu Magu, the Malé City Council has appealed to vessels not to dock between the Presidential Jetty and the Hulhumalé Ferry Terminal starting this Saturday, as the area will be closed off for construction work.

The section between the Henveiru Ferry Terminal and the Official Jetty is a key docking point for ferries operating between Malé and Velana International Airport, as well as nearby islands. It is also where many MNDF Coastguard vessels are docked.

The Council released a schedule on Monday detailing the phased closures required for the project.

In this regard, from Saturday, March 23, the area from the Henveiru Ferry Terminal to Fishermen’s Park will be closed until the construction is completed. Beginning March 30, the stretch from Fishermen’s Park to Jetty No. 5 will also be closed until the construction is completed. Later, from April 17, the section from Jetty No. 5 to the presidential jetty will be closed until construction finishes.

To support the road redevelopment works, the Council has instructed that all vessels currently docked in these areas to relocate for the duration of the project.

There has been rapid progress in the Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment project in recent months.

The section of Boduthakurufaanu Magu between the Fish Market and the presidential jetty was reopened to the public mid-December following three months of extensive development work under the project’s first phase, which included asphalt paving and modernization. The road was widened to four lanes, with substantially broader sidewalks constructed on either side.

The section of the road spanning from Fish Market to the atoll shops area was opened for public mid-February following completion of development works under the second phase of the project, which included asphalt paving and modernization. The road was widened to four lanes and designated a two-way.

Work on the project began on August 22, 2025, after the Ministry of Construction awarded state-owned Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) the project worth MVR 144.5 million on April 9, 2025, to be completed in one year and three months.

According to MTCC, the project involves asphalt paving along an 830-meter section from the ferry terminal near the Carnival area to the Fish Market, in addition to 737 meters of sheet piling. The company further stated that the addition of a comprehensive drainage system alongside the paving works will effectively resolve the area’s persistent flooding problem.
