Adubarey, a close aide to former tourism minister Ali Waheed, had served as a state minister during the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) administration that got elected in 2018. Ali Waheed was later dismissed following serious allegations of sexual assault, and Adubarey signed as a guarantor with the court to allow Ali Waheed to leave the country for medical purposes amid the trial. The former tourism minister later went on the run in the UK, and Adubarey was dismissed after he was sentenced to 15 days in prison for contempt of court over the incident.

Adubarey is also on trial for assault in a separate case.
