Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has begun identifying g individuals who have been dumping waste in the common areas of Hiyaa towers and warning them to stop.
In the Maldives, it is customary for families to refurbish their homes and replace furniture ahead of the holy month of Ramadan. As a result, the improper disposal of old household items in public spaces tends to increase during this time each year.
HDC never sleeps, always in service of the citizens.

But citizens must also be responsible.
This was never our way. Maldivians have always been clean, respectful of neighbors, and community-minded.

A similar incident recently occurred at residential flats operated by the Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC), where two individuals were fined for improper waste disposal.
Soon after, photos began circulating on social media showing stacks of empty boxes and large pieces of furniture abandoned on the ground floor of Hiyaa towers. The waste had been left in open areas near the elevators. The images also showed HDC employees clearing the debris from the site.
In a statement to Sun, an HDC official said the corporation was alerted to the illegal dumping at Hiyaa towers on Wednesday. The official stressed that such behavior is strictly forbidden and confirmed that efforts are underway to identify those responsible and instruct them to stop. However, it remains unclear whether any formal legal measures or penalties have been taken against the offenders.
