Temporary market for local farmers’ produce opened at North Harbor

Local market at Male': A temporary market for local farmers' produce has been set up at North Harbor.

The Agriculture Ministry has opened a temporary market in a move aimed at facilitating a streamlined marketplace for local farmers during the holy month of Ramadan.

The market has been set up in the North Harbor area, at the location previously occupied by Shot Café.

The Ministry stated that the outlet, branded as the ‘Farmers' Market,’ will sell only produce cultivated by farms across the Maldives, strictly prohibiting the sale of imported goods.

The market will operate from the start of Ramadan until the sixth day of Shawwal.

Measures have been put in place to transport agricultural products from different regions of the Maldives to Malé. According to the Ministry, vessels transporting goods from participating farmers are already on their way, with all consignments scheduled to reach Malé from their respective islands by Saturday.

The market will operate daily between 08:00am and 17:00pm, and again from 21:00pm to 23:00pm. A key feature of the market is the inclusion of produce from ten farms accredited under the "Maldives Good Agricultural Practices" (GAP) certification.

The initiative, involving farmers from seven islands nationwide, was organized through a joint effort between the Agriculture Ministry, Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), and other relevant stakeholders.
