Ex-President Waheed resigns as Special Envoy to the President

Former president Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik, on Tuesday, has resigned from his post as the Special Envoy to the President.

The President’s Office said Waheed send his letter of resignation to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Tuesday morning without disclosing any further details.

Notably, Waheed has resigned after he was named in the Epstein files, which are over six million pages of documents, images and videos detailing the criminal activities of American financier and convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. In this regard, Waheed is accused of communicating with Epstein via email.

The former president has yet to comment on the matter.

Waheed was appointed the Special Envoy to the President on May 26th of last year to advance the Maldives’ diplomatic interests.

Waheed has a Bachelor’s Degree in English Language and a Diploma in Teaching from the American University of Beirut, a Master’s Degree in Education Planning and a PhD from Stanford University.

He previously worked as a news anchor, a teacher, a principal, a United Nations international civil servant with UNICEF, UNDP and UNESCO, and as a member of the Parliament.

Waheed served as the Vice President from 2008 to 2012 during former President Mohamed Nasheed’s administration, and as the caretaker President from 2012 to 2013, following Nasheed’s resignation.

Epstein files has humiliated prominent public figures across the world including politicians, royalties, business conglomerates and celebrities.  

Notable figures mentioned in the Epstein files include US President Donald Trump, former US president Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, Bill gates, UK’s Prince Andrew.
