The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has advised people to refrain from creating unrest in Male’ and causing damage to private property.
HRCM, in a statement issued today, expressed concern over the injuries sustained by members of the public, security forces and media personnel during the unrest in Male’ today.
Protests were held in Male’ today in relation to the arrest of former President Mohamed Nasheed.
Sun Online journalist Murshid Abdul Hakeem and VTV cameraman Rilwan Moosa were attacked during the protests. The attackers stole Murshid’s phone, destroyed Rilwan’s camera and stole the camera’s memory card.
HRCM said that it was investigating how Nasheed was arrested, and that the commission’s officials visited Dhoonidhoo Police custodial this afternoon to clarify how the incidents related to Nasheed’s arrest transpired.
HRCM advised all groups to respect human rights, prioritise peace and order and refrain from activities that may impede the rights of another person.
