The United States has said that it is increasingly concerned about ongoing events in Malé, and urged all sides to remain calm and reject the use of violence.
The U.S. said in a statement released on the United States Virtual Presence Post Maldives, that they understand that both the Police Integrity Commission and the Human Rights Commission are monitoring the situation in the Maldives.
“We urge all sides to remain calm, reject the use of violence, and avoid rhetoric that could increase tensions. Former President Nasheed must be accorded due process under the law regarding his pending court cases.”
The U.S. also urged that the presidential elections scheduled for September 7, 2013 be free, fair, credible, transparent and inclusive; and called on the government to implement all the recommendations of the Commission of National Inquiry (CONI) report.
