Elections Commission has said that they will require to set up an additional 100 ballot boxes, in contrast to the number they established during the presidential elections of 2008.
Elections Commission (EC) President Fuad Thaufeeq said yesterday that the Commission’s calculations show that a total of 556 ballot boxes will be required for the presidential elections this year, and that the amount is 100 boxes more than the amount they set up for the last presidential elections.
Fuad said that the reason for the increase is due to an increase in the number of tourist resorts and islands designated to commercial work.
The Commission noted that ballot boxes were set up in 60 resorts in 2008, and in contrast, a 100 resorts have so far been identified to set up ballot boxed for this year’s elections.
“The number of resorts has increased. I recall that it was sixty-something, during last year’s presidential election. Now there it is in excess of 100, and we cannot say whether it will not increase within the next seven months. Commercial islands have also increased,” Fuad said.
The Commission also stated that ballot boxes will be set up in the same 5 foreign countries as that of the 2008 elections, but said that the number of ballot boxes required will depend on the amount of people that register to vote.
The voting for this year’s presidential elections is scheduled for September 7th and will have a total of 240,000 eligible voters.
