Health Ministry probes death of Addu woman following caesarean

Aishath Nazahath Ahmed Didi, 28, Thamannaa, S. Hithadhoo, an Addu City Council staff who died after complications following a cesarean.

Health Ministry is probing the death of a young woman who underwent an emergency cesarean (C-section) at Addu City’s International Medical and Diagnostic Centre (IMDC), who died after her condition deteriorated following the surgery.

The deceased has been identified as Aishath Nazahath Ahmed Didi, 28, Thamannaa, S. Hithadhoo. She is employed at Addu City Council’s Project Development Unit as an Associate Council Officer.

According to reliable sources, Nazahath visited IMDC for a consultation on her due date. The clinic initiated an emergency C-section because she had a fever and was vomiting.

Her condition worsened following the surgery, prompting IMDC to transfer her to Addu Equatorial Hospital (AEH) urgently. However, sources say she had already been dead by the time she was taken AEH.

Sources also report the newborn is in critical condition.

When questioned by Sun regarding the matter, Health Ministry confirmed it was investigating the case without providing any further details.

There have been prior cases of medical negligence in Maldives, including ones involving pregnant women and babies. However, it is unclear whether any action has been taken against parties found negligent in such cases.
