Raud pleads guilty to negligence in Yumnu's fall

CCTV footage of Raudh Ahmed Zilal, 21, and Mariyam Yumnu, 21, before she fell from the ninth-floor of H. Fentenoy.

Raud Ahmed Zilal has pleaded guilty to charges of failing to assist Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed after she fell from a building in Male'. The Criminal Court is expected to deliver a verdict next week under fast-track procedures.

The Prosecutor General’s Office filed charges against Raud in late May, accusing him of failing to provide assistance to a person in need without reasonable cause, a charge that carries a basic sentence of one month and six days in jail.

At Wednesday’s hearing, Raud admitted to the charge, prompting the court to proceed with a fast verdict.

According to the prosecution, Raud was present when Yumnu fell onto the roof of Mitazge, adjacent to Fentenoy. Despite knowing she had fallen, he did not offer help or alert authorities.

Raud was previously arrested on suspicion of involvement in the incident and remanded in custody. The PG’s Office had earlier stated that extended detention could apply if he remained in police custody.

A report by the Presidential Commission investigating Yumnu Rasheed’s case highlighted systemic issues and called for accountability, including an inquiry into police negligence.
