Google has announced a major investment in the Maldives, with plans to establish an international submarine cable landing station and network facility in Hithadhoo, Addu City.

The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade issued a statement on Monday welcoming the decision, which follows discussions between President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and Google executives during his visit to the United States in September 2024.

According to the ministry, the facility will be capable of supporting multiple international submarine cable systems. It will serve as a strategic digital gateway connecting Asia, Oceania, Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, positioning the Maldives at the heart of a new Indian Ocean connectivity corridor.

Connectivity points in Kulhudhuffushi (north), Greater Male' (central), and Hithadhoo (south) will form a geographically distributed network that enhances both national resilience and international relevance.

The ministry highlighted that Google’s investment reflects growing global confidence in the Maldives as a destination for high-value digital infrastructure. It also opens doors for future growth in cloud services, fintech, digital content, and technology start-ups.

The project will be implemented with the support of Dhiraagu and Ooredoo Maldives, ensuring local expertise and knowledge transfer are embedded in its development.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu described the investment as a “strong signal of global confidence” in the Maldives’ stable and investor-friendly environment. He said the project aligns with his vision for a diversified, inclusive, and digitally empowered economy, and reaffirms the Maldives’ readiness to play a proactive role in shaping global digital infrastructure.
