The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has on Thursday issued a public notice regarding a packet of “sweet areca nut” sold in local shops with a label claiming it is “approved by MFDA.”

According to the MFDA, while it grants permits to food manufacturers, processors, and service providers, it does not approve or certify individual food products. Therefore, labeling products with phrases such as “approved by MFDA” or “MFDA permitted” is misleading and may confuse consumers.

The authority emphasized that such labeling practices are not allowed and warned that legal action may be taken against businesses that falsely claim MFDA approval. The product in question was reportedly distributed by Yas Investment.

MFDA reiterated that under the Food Safety Act, a code of conduct for food production and sale was introduced in 2024 to ensure safe practices and regulatory compliance. The agency urged all food businesses to adhere strictly to these guidelines and avoid unauthorized claims on packaging.
