Dhiraagu Road Race fully powered by renewable energy in landmark milestone

Dhiraagu has marked a landmark milestone in its journey towards sustainability by fully powering this year’s Dhiraagu Maldives Road Race (DMRR) with renewable energy, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to sustainability, innovation, and community responsibility.

This was achieved through a grid-tied solar system that offset 100 percent of the event’s electricity consumption

During the event, the onsite solar installation produced 1,040 kWh of clean electricity—offsetting approximately 645 kilograms of CO₂ emissions. By powering the event through solar energy, Dhiraagu said it demonstrated how technology and sustainability can work hand in hand to reduce environmental impact. Moreover, the initiative supports global efforts to transition toward renewable energy and highlights how large-scale events can be both engaging and eco-friendly.

Dhiraagu said solar panels used at DMRR 2025 will be repurposed for the company’s ongoing solar projects, ensuring their continued contribution to the company’s renewable energy goals. Currently, Dhiraagu operates solar installations across 95 islands, reducing around 2,053 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, with 19% of its total energy consumption coming from renewable sources.

Since 2019, the Dhiraagu Maldives Road Race has also promoted a single-use plastic–free policy, encouraging participants to minimize plastic waste. Water stations are placed throughout the route, helping prevent the use of approximately 18,000 plastic bottles each year—bottles that might otherwise end up polluting the ocean.

Dhiraagu states these initiatives underscore the company’ strong commitment to sustainability and resource efficiency, reinforcing its dedication to reducing emissions, protecting the environment, and advancing renewable energy across the nation.
