China’s top prosecutors meet PG to discuss training in financial crime prosecution

A senior delegation from China’s Supreme People’s Procuratorate has met with the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) of Maldives to explore cooperation in prosecuting financial crimes, including money laundering and cybercrime. The visit marks the first official engagement between the two prosecutorial bodies.

The Chinese delegation arrived in Malé at the invitation of Prosecutor General Abbas Shareef, and was led by Shi Weizhong, Permanent Member of the Procuratorial Committee of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate. The meeting was held Wednesday at Hotel Jen.

According to the PGO, discussions focused on:

• Training Maldivian prosecutors in financial crime prosecution

• Upgrading institutional infrastructure

• Integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into case management systems

• Establishing a digital filing system

The Maldivian delegation included:

• Deputy Prosecutor General Mahmood Saleem

• Assistant Prosecutors General Maryam Fezleen and Shamra Shameem

• Public Prosecutors: Nishan Waheed (Director, International Affairs), Ahmed Naufal (Director, Prosecutor General’s Academy), Ahmed Shafeeu (Director, Media and Communications), Ahmed Naushad, and Maryam Lumma Abdul Hannan

The Chinese delegation also included Deputy Chief Prosecutors from various provinces, senior officials, and Chinese Ambassador Kong Xianhua.

The visit underscores China’s reputation for strict anti-corruption enforcement and reflects growing bilateral cooperation in legal and institutional development. The PGO stated that the engagement aims to strengthen prosecutorial capacity and foster long-term collaboration in justice sector reform.
