National Meteorological Service has issued coastal flooding warning to the Southern and Central part of Maldives.
An official from Met Office who spoke to “Sun” said they forecasted minor coastal flooding to some Southern and Central islands.
Met Office reports the coastal flooding is connected to the solar eclipse set to take place over North America. Coastal flooding is expected during high tide.
A number of Maldivian islands had been experience flooding; including L. Dhanbidhoo and K. Gulhi.
Dhanbidhoo councilman, Hussain Fazeel reported to “Sun” that the island had been experiencing coastal flooding since noon, this Monday. He said flooding had reached up to 200 feet into the island, reaching into some of the houses.
“Flood water reached into about seven houses and caused damage to trees. This the worst case of flooding experienced in the island in 12 years,” said Fazeel.
President of Gulhi Council, Mohamed Fathuhulla reported the island had been experiencing flooding since 11:30 am this Monday. He said flooding has reached up to 300 feet into the island.
Fathuhulla said people were working on stacking sacks at entranceways of the houses located near the coast to prevent flood water from reaching in.
