Company which built Dubai’s palm island arrives in Maldives for land reclamation projects

Officials from Dutch company Van Oord – the leading international contractor specializing in dredging, marine engineering and offshore projects – which built the famous Palm Islands in Dubai, United Arab Emirates – have arrived in Maldives to for land reclamation projects in three islands.

The team arrived in Maldives with a dredge to reclaim land in G. Dh. Thinadhoo, S. Feydhoo and K. Hinmafushi.

Media consultant of Housing Ministry, Ahmed Fazaal Hussein said on Sunday that the team would first be reclaiming 50 hectors of land and building a 1,680-meter water break in S. Feydhoo. And that the project would start by Tuesday – at the latest.

The team would then be reclaiming 53 hectors of land and building an 1,852-meter water break in Thinadhoo and then reclaiming 21.6 hectors of land and building an 890-meter water break in Hinmafushi.

Van Oord has been contracted to complete the MVR 603.7 million project within 14 months.
