Raajje TV has said that the doctors have said that the station's journalist Ibrahim Waheed (Aswaad) is still unconscious and that his condition is frail. Ibrahim Waheed was attacked in the head with an iron rod last night while he was travelling on a motorcycle near Artificial Beach. He has since been taken to Sri Lanka and is undergoing treatment.
Speaking to Sun on the phone from Sri Lanka, the Chairman of Raajje TV Akram Kamaaluddheen said that Ibrahim Waheed has sustained head injuries in four separate places and that he is suffering from internal bleeding to his brains, as said by doctors in ADK, and later reiterated by doctors in the hospital in Sri Lanka.
Akram said that the Sri Lanka hospital doctors have said that they will decide on whether to perform an operation after keeping him under observation for 24 hours.
“Aswaad is currently in a very critical stage. There has not been an operation since we came here, doctors have said that they will operate after monitoring his situation for 24 hours,” Akram said.
Ibrahim Waheed (Aswaad) was attacked while travelling with Raajje TV CEO Abdulla Yameen near Artificial Beach at around 1:15 am last night. Yameen said that he is unable to say who Waheed’s attackers were and that they had fled right after attacking Waheed with an iron rod. Waheed was then taken to the hospital by the police.
Police have said that they have started a special operation in search of those who attacked the journalists last night. They have however, not yet made an arrest in relation to the attacks.
In a separate incident last night, TVM reporters were subjected to a packet of thinner (a volatile solvent used to make paint or other solutions less viscous) while they were covering the MDP protests last night. State institutions have strongly condemned these attacks on journalists.
