Will work towards finding the people who attacked the journalists: Commissioner

Commissioner of Police Abdulla Riyaz has strongly condemned the attacks on three journalists last night and said that the police will, to the best of their capacity, search for the people who carried out those attacks.

Speaking after the inauguration of Alif Dhaalu Dhigaurah Police Station today, the Commissioner said that every journalist is entitled to work independently and that he “strongly condemns” last night’s attacks.

Referring to the brutal attacks made on Raajje TV journalist Ibrahim Waheed (Aswaad) last night, Commission Riyaz said that it is not right to attack a journalist regardless of which station they are affiliated to, and that they will investigate the attack. He advised all parties disallow such incidents to be repeated.

He also noted that protests should be conducted according to laws and regulations and that protests will not be allowed to continue such that it causes difficulties to businesses and pedestrians. He urged to conduct protests peacefully.

Two TVM journalists were attacked last night while they were covering the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) protest. The Raajje TV journalist was attacked while he was on the street.
