President congratulates Maldives football team, urges them to play with unity and national spirit

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu made a telephone call to the Maldives national football team on Sunday, during which he congratulated the players on the previous day’s success and urged them to play with unity and national spirit.

The Maldives football team is currently in Sri Lanka for the South Asian Super Cup 2025. The team defeated Sri Lanka 3-0 in the opening fixture of the tournament on Saturday evening.

President Muizzu called the team’s coach, Mohamed Shiyaz (Mohan) on Sunday morning to congratulate them on their victory.

According to the President’s Office, he praised their performance in Saturday’s match and urged them to remain determined in their pursuit of success throughout the tournament.

“He further encouraged the team to play with unity and national spirit, striving for prestigious titles and bringing honor to Maldivian football,” said the President’s Office.

Meanwhile, Mohan said the team was happy to receive the call from President Muizzu, adding that it was an additional source of motivation,

He said the players are determined to give their best and aim to secure the tournament trophy.
