Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has peacefully ended its protests last night. The protests were part of a series of nightly protests staged by MDP against the charges currently taken up by the state upon former president Mohamed Nasheed.
The protesters gathered near Naadhee building in Sosum Magu last night and air their sentiments, though there were no confrontations.
The protesters said that the court charges against Nasheed are political and ended last night’s protests saying that the protests will continue.
While last night’s gathering was peaceful, confrontations took place between the police and the protesters late yesterday afternoon, when police had taken a few people into custody.
Last night is the seventh night of continued MDP protests under the slogan “For the protection of president Nasheed”, against the charges taken up against Nasheed for the illegal detention of Criminal Court Judge Abdulla Mohamed during Nasheed’s presidency. The previous week had seen a number of clashes between the police and the protesters.
