Students of Majeediyya School have been asked to go home as protests by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) against former President Mohamed Nasheed’s trial have made it impossible to hold classes in the school.
A senior official of the school management told Sun Online today that it is not possible to teach at the school due to the protests, and that students had to be sent home on a previous occasion as well.
He said that offensive language used by protesters has serious adverse impact on the students of Majeediyya School.
“Protesters are using bad language. The noise makes it impossible for students to hear what the teachers say. The Quran recitation competition that that was scheduled for today also had to be cancelled due to the noise of bad language being used,” he said.
The afternoon session at Majeediyya School is for students of Grade 2 and Grade 8.
He said that today’s protest began while the students were doing a test, and that the test had to be cancelled due to the loud noise coming from the protesters. He said that the parents have been asked to fetch the students.
He expressed concern and sadness over the fact that protests and the use of bad language near the premises of a school are disrupting education.
It has not yet been possible to get a comment of MDP or the Education Ministry regarding this matter.
Protests are ongoing near Majeediyya School where protesters are claiming that the trial against Nasheed is a ‘political trial’. This series of protests by MDP are being held every night.
The Prosecutor General (PG) has said that he does not intend to withdraw the charges against Nasheed regarding the arrest of Criminal Court Abdullah Mohamed during Nasheed’s presidency.
Nasheed has meanwhile taken refuge in the Indian Embassy.
