Indian newspaper The Times of India has reported that China has cautiously made its first comments regarding the political situation in Maldives saying that they hoped the issue will be handled properly, after former president Mohamed Nasheed sought refuge in the Indian High Commission in Male'.
The Indian news agency reported that the Chinese foreign ministry said in a brief written response to questions on the situation in Maldives that the "The Chinese side sincerely hopes that Maldives could maintain peace, stability and development, and hopes and believes that relevant issue could be properly handled."
The Times of India noted that this is the first time the Chinese government reacted to the crisis in Male’, while the Indian media has reported the day-to-day developments unfolding in the capital as well as responses from New Delhi.
The newspaper also said that "China has expanded its influence in India's backyard in recent years with aid and heavy investment both in Sri Lanka and Maldives."
It was also noted that China opened its embassy in Male’ in 2011.
