Numerous glass bottles thrown at the police at last night

Large amounts of glass bottles have been thrown at the police last night, by protesters of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) who claim that the trial against former President Mohamed Nasheed is politically motivated.

No police officer was injured in the attacks.

The protest commenced near Tsunami Monument as usual, and glass bottles were hurled at the police in front of Naadhee building on Sosun Magu.

Protesters went from Majeedhee Magu, and first gathered at the junction of Fareedhee Magu and Chaandhanee Magu. They attempted to break through the police barricades in this area and go to Republic Square, but were stopped and sent off by the police.

The protest was concluded late in the night in front of Naadhee building.

The police did not use force to break up last night’s protest, and only one protester was arrested.

Stones and glass bottles have been thrown during the series of protests by MDP, resulting in injuries to the police as well as journalists.

Meanwhile, the Human Rights Commission has said in a recent report that the police use excessive force to break up the protests.
