Human Rights Ambassador Ahmed Ibrahim Didi (Sandhaan Ahanmaidhy) has said that the thing the Elections Commission (EC) needs to do now is dissolve Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Ahmed Ibrahim said at a press conference today that a decision should be made that MDP carries out illegal activities, and that the party should be dissolved by EC.

“What Fuad Thaufeeg needs to do now is decide that MDP is an illegal party, and remove it from the political party registry,” he said.

Ahmed Ibrahim said that in addition to creating unrest on the streets under, MDP carries out several illegal activities.

He said that the purpose of the street protests against the trial against former President Mohamed Nasheed where protesters claim that the charges against Nasheed are politically motivated, is to undermine the constitution.

He said that calls to withdraw the charges against Nasheed are a violation of the constitution, and that the groups or parties that call for this must be arrested.

“[MDP supporters say during protests] He is our presidential candidate, charges cannot be pressed against him, the charges should be withdrawn. Our constitution does not allow such protests. The charges are pressed by an independent institution. So if efforts are being made to undermine the authority of that institution, I would have to say that they, or that party, should be arrested,” he said.

Ahmed Ibrahim criticised President of EC Fuad Thaufeeg for saying that ‘a fair election could be held if the unrest between the police and MDP can be set right’, and said that Thaufeeg lacks all sense of responsibility.

He also said that MDP should take responsibility for all damage caused during their protests.

Ahmed Ibrahim was attacked during a protest held by MDP under its series of protests calling for the withdrawal of the charges against Nasheed regarding the detention of Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdullah Mohamed.
