The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has requested the Indian High Commission to assist the police in implementing the second order by Hulhumale’ Court to arrest former President Mohamed Nasheed in order to produce him in court.
Sun understands that the police have requested Foreign Ministry to make ‘arrangements’ to facilitate the implementation of the order issued upon the police to arrest Nasheed in order to produce him in court on Wednesday. This has also been confirmed to Sun by the police.
The police have sent a letter in this regard to the Foreign Ministry, along with a copy of the order by Hulhumale’ Court.
A Police Media Official said that the Foreign Ministry was requested to facilitate permission to enter the High Commission following the advice of the Attorney General.
An official of Foreign Ministry said that a request has been made from the Indian High Commission today, to assist the police in implementing the order to arrest Nasheed.
Nasheed entered the Indian High Commission following a court order upon the police to arrest him in order to produce him in court last Wednesday, for the trial regarding the illegal detention of Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdullah Mohamed. Nasheed has stayed inside the High Commission since.
The Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations (VCDR) states that the premises of foreign embassies are protected and must not be entered even by the security forces of the host country, except with the permission of the head of the mission.
