Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has strongly condemned the continuous protests being staged by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), saying that individuals of the public and members of the state security forces are sustaining injuries as a result of the protests.
Speaking to the press in the PPM office today, the party spokesperson Galolhu-South MP Ahmed Mahlouf said that PPM strongly condemns the protests by the MDP, and that the claim that the protests are peaceful protest is in fact a disguise.
“There were confrontations during the MDP protests held on the streets of Male’ last night. PPM strongly condemns these acts, intended to create chaos in the name of protests. A number of protests were held during that last year. We did not seen the police obstructing protesters during peaceful protests,” Mahlouf said.
Defence Minister Colonel (Rtd) Ahmed Nazim had also said that he believes that the right to freedom of assembly guaranteed by the constitution must be duly allowed and called on all political parties to resort to discussions in times of conflict.
Police have also said that the freedom of speech and expression are abused to create contempt in the hearts of the public and that these attempts have resulted in injuries to a number of members of the security forces, and also added that such abuse has had psychological effects on the general public.
