MDP protests are not peaceful: Police

The Police have said that supporters of former president Mohamed Nasheed’s Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) are disturbing the peace in Male’ and that the protests their current protests are not peaceful.

A number of people, including members of the public, police and the military were injured last night during the “rally” held by MDP.

Police said that protesters behaved aggressively and acted unlawfully, throwing bottles and stones towards law enforcement authorities and that all this was done under the guise of freedom of expression.

“Actions of opposition have been initiated, led by the Maldivian Democratic Party and supporters of the former president Mohamed Nasheed. Following such actions, they have tried to disturb the peace in Male’, during the day and night. They have thrown bottles and stones at the law enforcement services,” Police said.

Police said that reflecting on the actions of the protesters, there is no room for the protests to be considered peaceful.
