The international campaign ‘One Billion Rising’ on preventing violence against women has been officially launched in the Maldives today.

Special activities were held at Republic Square this evening, organised by NGO Hope for Women.

The One Billion Rising campaign was started following research that revealed that one in three women will be raped or beaten in her lifetime, which means, based on the world’s population, one billion women and girls will be raped or beaten at some point in their lives.

Hope For Women said that activists, authors, artists and all individuals in the society will be represented in the activities carried out inn Male’ and throughout out the Maldives today, to protect women and create awareness on violence against women.
