Minister of Defence and National Security Colonel (Rtd) Mohamed Nazim has said that Maldivians sometimes treat foreign labourers in inhumane and degrading ways and has called upon the people to stop such actions.
Speaking at a ceremony held today to instate the “Bidheysee Hiya” (foreigner housing) established to house undocumented workers, Nazim called upon the people to refrain from committing acts of violence against foreigners in the future.
“Inhumane and degrading actions against foreigners do happen in the Maldives. I am calling upon the people to refrain from committing any acts of violence or degrading treatment against labourers or foreigners working in the country,” said Nazim.
With regard to undocumented workers, Nazim said that the problem is a of national proportions and that the problem can only be solved if government institutions and the public work together. He said that Maldivians continue to hire undocumented workers living on the streets and said that the government asks the people to inform the relevant authorities of such workers.
Controller of Immigration Dr. Mohamed Ali and Minister of Environment and Energy Dr. Mariyam Shakeela, including senior immigrations officials and employees also attended the ceremony held to instate “Bidheysee Hiya”.
