A letter has been sent to Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla seeking to clarify the reasons behind the delays in the commencement of physical works Addu City’s Hankede Integrated Tourism Development Project.
The letter was sent by ruling PNC’s Central Hithadhoo MP Ahmed Azaan.
Maldives Fund Management Corporation (MFMC) contracted China National Electric Engineering Company (CNEEC) for the project under an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) basis for USD 142.9 million on March 23rd, 2023.
Azaan, in his letter, detailed concerns shared by Addu residents over the delays in the commencement of physical works on the project.
In this regard, Azaan stated that despite the current administration hosting a large-scale ceremony with fireworks to inaugurate the project on April 15th of last year, almost a year later, no work has been done on the project, aside from clearing some trees in the Hanekede area.
As such, he stressed that Addu residents should be clearly made aware of the reasons behind the delays in the commencement of physical works on the development of Hankede.
Hence, Azaaz sought from Parliament Speaker to summon the heads of MFMC to Parliament’s State-Owned Enterprises Committee for questioning.
The project's scope encompasses the development of 2,082 beds across 1,041 rooms, featuring a diverse range of residential and real estate establishments.
The diverse real estate establishments range from 2 grand hotels, 2 deluxe hotels, 10 boutique hotels, 4 guesthouses, 64 serviced apartments, and 17 beach villas.
Besides this, the project will feature a wide array of recreational facilities including a knowledge center, mixed sports building, outdoor beach sports, and theaters.
Other amenities reported to feature in the integrated tourism project include a shopping block, food courts, and high-end restaurants.
