The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has sent corruption cases against Maldives Ports Authority’s (MPA) former Director of Hussain Hilmy of Ma. Fahivilla and former Assistant Managing Director Abdul Shakoor Ahmed of G. Aasani to the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office, accusing them of conferring undue advantage to a particular group in the process of purchasing a crane.
A statement released by ACC today states that while the agreement with the Sri Lankan company in this regard stated that the two cranes worth $704,880 (MVR 10.86 million) should be delivered to MPA within 180 days, the two cranes were handed over 23 days after the specified duration.
ACC said that according to the agreement, $54,628.20 should have been deducted from the price of the two cranes, but this amount was not deducted as liquidated damages.
ACC said that as the full contracted price of $704,880 was paid for the two cranes, and as the liquidated damages of $54,628.20 was not deducted despite the delay, this was an act of corruption carried out with the purpose of conferring undue advantage to a particular group.
