President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has assured completing the stalled harbor project and public works site project in Raa atoll Maakurathu.

He assured completing these projects before the end of 2025, and affirmed this during his meeting with Maakurathu Islanc Council, Women’s Development Committee (WDC), and heads of institutions on Thursday, January 23rd.

During the meeting, the council shared the development plan and the challenges they faced in achieving the goals, and noted that the island community wants the harbor project to be completed at the earliest.

The council also requested to resolve the issues with the water and sewerage service system, and highlighted the challenges faced by schools on the island due to lack of special educational needs (SEN) teachers. Additionally, the council members also discussed the support needed for the development of the sports sector, including a fitness and recreation center and a new futsal ground.

While addressing the public of Maakurathu, President Muizzu said several key projects commenced during his tenure as the Minister of Housing in support of the then Maakurathu council, but those works had stalled in the past five years.

“I assure to complete the works that we had commenced back then,” Muizzu commented.

He affirmed both stalled projects will resume from its current state and will be concluded before the year ends.

“The public works system will significantly reduce the cost of infrastructure maintenance in the islands,” Muizzu added.

Speaking at the meeting, President Muizzu provided additional information about the development plans for the island through his accompanying delegation of cabinet ministers and senior government officials.
