Minister assesses state of Male’ roads following flooding

Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen has visited Male’ roads to assess the situation following severe flooding amid heavy rain.

Transport Ministry, via a post on X, said Minister Ameen and the Ministry’s staff will actively participate in efforts being undertaken by authorities to ensure the safety and security of Male’ roads following flooding in the Maldivian capital.

Male’ was severely flooded following nonstop heavy rain on Friday.

Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF)’s Fire and Rescue Service is undertaking efforts to drain the floods. In this regard, 16 pumps have been placed across six areas in Male’. MNDF is also undertaking efforts in collaboration with Male’ City Council to place sandbags at areas that are prone to flooding.

Hulhumale’ has also been severely flooded in the heavy rain.

Islands have also reported significant damage following flooding caused by heavy rain and swell waves. MNDF is also active in these islands to minimize damage and assist residents impacted by the floods. 

They include K. Maafushi, K. Guraidhoo, Dh. Kudahuvadhoo, Dh. Meedhoo, ADh. Maamigili, Sh. Narudhoo and F. Nilandhoo.

A yellow alert is still in effect from Noonu Atoll to Laamu Atoll until 04:00am warning of torrential rain and thunderstorms with gusts of winds up to 40 miles per hour and rough seas.
