Director General of Ministry of Education to be prosecuted

Antil-Corruption Commission (ACC) has sent a case to the Prosecutor General’s Office (PG) for the prosecution of the Director General of Ministry of Education Abdul Sameeu Hassan for charges relating to attainment of undue advantage through use of influence from position.

ACC has asked to prosecute Sameeu for awarding MVR 25,000 against the Public Finance Regulation in 2012, for the project of packing and delivery of a number of text books that were printed by the Ministry. They said that the notice seeking a party for the project was signed by Sameeu and was posted on the Ministry’s notice board.

The Commission has said that in addition, investigations have shown that Sameeu’s wife holds shares in the company to which the project was awarded, and that Sameeu himself has held shares in the company in the past.

The Commission has said that posting the notice on the Ministry notice board deprives the interested parties to compete for the project on equal grounds. They also said that Ministry documents show that the Ministry usually posts notices on the board for announcements of project worth less than MVR 25,000.
