Committee to request for list of police and MNDF officers who

The Parliament Committee on Oversight of the Government has decided to request the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Defence for a list of police and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) officers who violated the law on 6, 7 and 8 February 2012.

The committee made this decision at its meeting today, based on the report of the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) which states that a group of police and MNDF officers had carried out activities against the state.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Chairman Ali Waheed said that the committee had decided to request Home Ministry and Defence Ministry for a list of names of police and MNDF officers who had violated the law, as well as for a list of those who were promoted after the change of government.

He said that the two ministries would be requested to provide the lists to the parliament before the end of official work hours on Sunday.

Ali Waheed said that this information is necessary for the committee’s investigation of the CNI report. He said that while President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik had said that CNI’s recommendations should be implemented, the committee would have to monitor if this is being done.

“We have come to realise that unless we have this information, we would not be able to compile an additional report. The members believe that only then can they understand the government’s actions after the CNI report,” he said.

At today’s meeting, the committee also decided against including the team of Associate Professor Anders Henriksen in the committee’s investigation. Ali Waheed said that the reason for this decision was that Henriksen had published a report saying that former President Nasheed’s government was changed by a coup. He said that it would not be fair to include a person who had taken a stand on the issue in the investigation.

The committee also decided to check the steps taken by the Prosecutor General (PG), the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and the Police Integrity Commission (PIC) in relation to the recommendations in the CNI Report. In this regard, PG Ahmed Muizzu will be summoned to the committee at 2:30 pm tomorrow, PIC at 3:30 pm, and HRCM at 4:00 pm.
