Jumhoory Party (JP)’s leader, Maamgili MP Qasim Ibrahim cautioned the public on Wednesday over scams being conducted under his name by using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Via a post on X, Qasim said AI-generated deepfake photos and videos of him were being circulated on various social media platforms.

He detailed that the videos, which also include audio, falsely depict him promoting opportunities for Maldivians in various financial schemes such as offshore trading and quick-return investments. It is claimed in the videos that these opportunities are facilitated via national bank, Bank of Maldives (BML).

Qasim said deepfake videos of him were being leveraged as a modern scam tactic in a cowardice act.

Noting that the videos were being circulated via Instagram, Facebook and, and TikTok, in addition to messaging platforms such as Viber and WhatsApp, Qasim advised the public against falling for such scams.

“It is also my earnest request that the public refrains from sharing content generated using Artificial Intelligence such as video clips on various social media platforms and on Viber groups and WhatsApp groups,” he said.

Qasim underscored personally receiving some of the videos from individuals who believed they were authentic due to their realistic nature and in this trajectory, reiterated that they were not real.

Maldives has seen a recent rise in scam cases with perpetrators using various modern tactics to fraudulently obtain money. Recently, Maldives Hajj Corporation’s Managing Director Mohamed Shakeel warned the public over scam calls being made in his name.
