Central Maafannu MP Asma Rasheed and Nilandhoo MP Fathimath Sauda have been elected to two positions within the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) as representatives Asia-Pacific region.

The MPs were elected to the posts during the 149th IPU Assembly held in Geneva, Switzerland.

In this regard, MP Asma was elected to the IPU High-Level Advisory Group on Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism (HLAG) and MP Sauda was elected to the IPU Forum of Young Parliamentarians.

IPU’s High-Level Advisory Group on Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism provides strategic guidance to parliaments on policies aimed at combating terrorism and preventing violent extremism and serves as a global parliamentary focal point, addressing one of today’s most urgent global challenges.

The Forum of Young Parliamentarians is dedicated to enhancing youth participation in parliaments globally. Less than three percent of MPs worldwide account for youth. Hence, the Forum plays a critical role in ensuring their voices are represented in political decision-making at both national and international levels.

People’s Majlis has been an active member of IPU since joining the Union in 2005. In this trajectory, Maldivian MPs has previously held various key positions within the IPU, underscoring the Parliament’s significant contributions to international parliamentary initiatives.
