Three islands for tourism development omitted, additional six lagoons and island added

Three islands have been omitted from the list of islands, land plots and lagoons available for tourism development while an additional six lagoons and an island have been added to the list.

Tourism Ministry, via a statement, said it was the third amendment being made to the Announcement No. ( IIJL )88-PS/88i2024i36, dated May 30th, 2024, seeking submission of proposals to develop tourist facilities.

The three islands which were removed in this regard are:

  • Lhaviyani Atoll Dhiffushi (with Maidhoo) – 15.17 + 20.99 hectares
  • Thaa Atoll Kanimeedhooo – 10 hectares
  • Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll Kalhehutta – 7.61 hectares

The additional six lagoons added to the list are:

  • Lagoon from Baa Atoll – 0.60 hectares
  • Three lagoons from Kaafu Atoll – 0.20 hectares, 82 hectares and 47 hectares respectively
  • Lagoon from Vaavu Atoll – 0.14 hectares
  • Lagoon from Alifu Dhaalu Atoll – 0.35 hectares
  • The additional island added to the list:
  • Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll Raaverinkolhihutta

As per the Ministry, the Lease Acquisition Cost (LAC) for the newly added lagoons and the islands will be calculated in accordance with the Ministry’s initial announcement. The initial announcement set down USD 8,495,150 as the lease acquisition cost.

Interested parties have been instructed to submit their proposals for the islands and lagoons including for plot of lagoon with proposed size of lagoon and demarcated map, to be acquired as per the aforementioned regulation along with the application form which is available on the Ministry’s website.
